Upgrade your cereal to Nut Crunch
Convenience foods are everywhere and due to a lack of time and money, they have become a staple in a lot of our diets however they’re wreaking havoc on our health and wellbeing! If there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that embracing a little inconvenience is the secret to a long, happy, healthy life – so let’s start but upgrading your convenient breakfast!
You will need;
Knife, Chopping board, bowl, storage jar.
Ingredients to make approximately 10-12 servings;
- 500g bag of mixed raw nuts
- 100g raisins (or other dried fruit)
- 100g of coconut flakes
- 50g sunflower seeds
- 50g pumpkin seeds
- Optional – any combination of nuts and seeds that take your fancy (or if you’re like me – are on offer!)
The best thing about this recipe is you can put your own personal spin on it. I roughly chop 3/4 of the nuts then mix all ingredients together in the bowl before transferring to the storage jar. You could add flax seeds, goji berries, sliced almonds, Brazil nuts – literally whatever tickles your taste buds.
Top Tip: This mix can also double up as a handy trail mix to pop in your bag!
This is much more filling than the processed shop bought cereals which means you will only need a fraction of the quantity. Literally, just a handful with 4-5tbsp of full-fat Greek yoghurt and a small serving of berries will easily see you through until lunch. Although the amount in the bowl looks smaller than usual, your belly will tell you otherwise!
Top tip: To aid digestion, make sure you slow down and chew your food properly – your stomach doesn’t have teeth and seeds are tricky to break down to spend a little longer on each mouthful to get the full benefits!
Is it worth the inconvenience?
Nut’s aren’t cheap so although organic raw nuts from a health shop would be the best option, we’re all about progress not perfection.
I got everything in the first picture from Lidl for £7.48 which works out cheaper than 2 bags of granola (£3.60) The only difference is the nut crunch has a much higher nutrient value, meaning you’ll be properly fuelling your body and mind for the day ahead.
As for time, it took me under 5 minutes to chuck all the ingredients in a jar and shake them up – making it less likely I’ll ever need to reach for those sugary cereals again.
Thanks for reading this post – I hope you enjoy upgrading your cereal too!
