MORE THAN JUST EXERCISE
If you’ve been to our site before you’ll know two of the three principles we promote to live a healthy life are; outdoor exercise and community support, which is why last month we decided to round up some clients and head to Leybourne Lakes to take part in Park Run.
For those of you who haven’t heard of Park Run, they offer free timed 5km runs every Saturday morning up and down the country and even internationally. They are responsible for getting more people active than any government initiative and have one of the most welcoming communities you’ll ever come across in the exercise world.
However for most people the thought of running 5km is still daunting, which is where the volunteering part comes in. Each week Park Run relies on the volunteers to help out at each run. If you don’t feel you’re ready to run yet I challenge you to do it just once – the atmosphere is contagious so it will instantly motivate you and once you are ready to run you won’t be half as nervous because you’ll know what to expect.
“The biggest limitations are the ones we create in our own mind”
So why am I telling you all of this? Well last week I experienced first hand the magic of Park Run. Myself and Tom have always been sporty so it’s easy for us to take for granted the significance completing a 5km without stopping, but the truth is for some people it’s a huge milestone to overcome on their way back to optimal health.
Thankfully we are fortunate enough to experience these significant moments with our clients every month. Last month Mandy, Julie and Guy who all attend our mixed ability fitness classes (all pictured below) completed their first Park Run and we couldn’t be prouder of their progress.
All three of them started our classes presuming they couldn’t run for 2 minutes let alone 5km, but the combination of functional fitness and core work we do in the classes combined with their training plans has really paid off and proves to everyone – as long as you focus on progress not perfection, anything is possible!
